Aerys (pronounced air-iss) is a 6 year old German Shepherd... And the heart of our closest friend Ashley Angstadt's world.
Ashley is a single mom of three and through life's hardest moments (divorce, change, raising her children), Aerys has been her constant. Her teammate, her stability, and her best friend. From the time he was born, they've been inseparable and together they have done incredible things, competing in Flyball, even making it to compete at Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.
But more than that, Aerys is her support, comfort, and her family.
An aggressive oral cancer is threatening to change all of that.
What's Happening?
Late last year, Ashley noticed that something wasn't right while at a Flyball tournament. What initially seemed like a possible tooth abscess turned into something far more serious.
A biopsy confirmed that Aerys has an aggressive spindle cell tumor in his upper jaw.
Thankfully it has not spread, but he needs surgery immediately to remove the tumor and part of his jaw to give him the best chances of survival and allow him to live a normal life doing the things he loves.
The Plan
Aerys has an appointment on Friday, March 27th to meet with an experienced oral surgeon to determine the exact plan of action and get quotes for the full scope of care that he will require to fight this.
So far, Ashley has paid close to $2,000 to have the biopsy, xrays, and complete staging performed to ensure that it has not spread. The oral surgeon will require a deposit of $1,000 to schedule, with the rest due on the day of surgery. The early estimate given was a minimum of $5,000 due to the complexity of the surgery.
